একটি বইমেলা একটি আকর্ষণীয় মেলা যেখানে বিভিন্ন ধরনের বই প্রদর্শিত হয়, আজকাল এটি খুব জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছে। আমাদের দেশে সাধারণত প্রতি বছর বিভিন্ন জায়গায় অনেক বইমেলা হয়। আমাদের দেশে যে দুটি প্রধান বইমেলা অনুষ্ঠিত হয় তা হল একুশে বইমেলা এবং ঢাকা বইমেলা। অন্যান্য ছোট আকারের মেলাও নববর্ষের দিনসহ অন্যান্য কিছু অনুষ্ঠানে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। বিশেষ করে বাংলা একাডেমি প্রতিষ্ঠান প্রাঙ্গণে এটির আয়োজন করে। বইমেলা আয়োজনের মূল উদ্দেশ্য হল বইয়ের প্রতি সর্বস্তরের মানুষের আগ্রহ জাগানো। একটি বইমেলা এক সপ্তাহ বা এক মাস পর্যন্ত চলতে পারে- বইমেলায় শত শত প্রকাশক ও বইয়ের দোকান অংশ নেয়। স্টলগুলো সুন্দরভাবে সাজানো হয়েছে, সেখানে বিভিন্ন ধরনের বই বিক্রি হয়। একটি বইমেলায় বিপুল সংখ্যক পুরুষ ও মহিলা গ্রাহকের সমাগম হয় নতুন লেখকরা প্রায়ই তাদের নতুন বই নিয়ে আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে। এ ধরনের মেলায় সেমিনার ও সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানও হয়। বইয়ের পাশাপাশি অন্যান্য প্রবন্ধ যেমন গান ও আবৃত্তির ক্যাসেট, ভিউ-কার্ড, ক্যালেন্ডার, পোস্টার ইত্যাদি মেলায় বিক্রি হয়। আমি বই খুব পছন্দ করি. তাই, যখনই বইমেলায় যাওয়ার সুযোগ পাই, নিতে দ্বিধা করি না। আসলে বইমেলা আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয় বই আমাদের সেরা সঙ্গী। বইমেলা থেকে সুলভ মূল্যে আমরা এই সেরা বন্ধুদের পাই। এ ধরনের বইমেলা সফল করতে শৃঙ্খলা, কঠোর আইনশৃঙ্খলা পরিস্থিতি, উপযুক্ত অবস্থান, ক্রেতা-বিক্রেতার নিরাপত্তা অত্যন্ত জরুরি।
